Services
Each individual referred to Crossroads Centers is fully
evaluated by a licensed or certified professional in a
comfortable, confidential environment. Our assessment
process involves a comprehensive evaluation:
- Complete biopsychosocial assessment through a
one-hour personal interview process that covers drug use
and history, medical, education, employment, legal,
family (of origin and nuclear),
psychiatric/psychological, leisure, spiritual, and
sexual issues as well as a mental status examination
- Addiction Severity Index
- Nutrition Screen
- Chronic Pain Screen
- Tuberculosis Screen
- HIV Screen
- Urinalysis (as appropriate)
- Recommendations for treatment and diagnoses along
the five DSM-IV axes
If the individual was referred to Crossroads Centers by a
community professional (and we have a valid release of
information) our professional will contact the referral
source after the evaluation to review recommendations and
obtain additional information as appropriate.
Each individual admitted to a Crossroads Centers program
is asked to sign releases of information for work site
professionals (supervisors/EAPs/HR), family members, and
physicians and/or other treating medical professionals as
deemed appropriate. Our staff maintains meticulous
communication with as many community professionals as need
to be kept informed for each case we treat.
Crossroads Centers staff are rigorously trained to
collect urines from clients discretely and professionally.
All client urinalyses are observed by same-sex staff to
assure that samples are not contaminated. Clients are
trained to observe staff package, seal, and place urine
samples in our locked storage units for collection by the
laboratory. Results are available within 24 hours for
all routine urinalyses. Where we have appropriate
releases of information, results are forwarded to referral
sources as appropriate.
Our laboratory is highly professional and nationally
accredited. heir toxicologists are always available to
answer questions and provide professional guidance on
interpreting test results.
Crossroads Centers also conducts routine urinalyses for
area businesses for pre-employment screening and for-cause
screening. The same rigorous procedures are followed
for these cases.
Occasionally a client is evaluated at Crossroads Centers
who requires a level of care not offered by our programs.
In that case, our staff will obtain appropriate
authorization from the managed care company (or other
insurance group) and will make arrangements for admission to
the appropriate program whenever possible:
- Inpatient treatment
- Inpatient detoxification
- Residential treatment
- Half-way house
- Psychiatric hospitalization
- Long term treatment program
During treatment clients often need services not provided
by Crossroads Centers staff. In that case client are
referred to appropriate clinicians:
- Psychiatrists or psychologists for testing and/or
medication evaluation
- Social Workers or Licensed Clinical Professionals
- Physicians for History and Physical Evaluations or
special treatment needs
- Pain Management Specialists
- Nutritionists
- Reading or Vocation Specialists
Crossroads Centers has several interventionists and has a
list of additional professionals who specialize in helping
families get loved ones to accept treatment for their
alcohol or drug problems. Interventions involve
several meetings with family members (or others who care) to
develop a plan for confronting some one with an addiction
problem who has been resistant to suggestion for treatment.
For more information, call 410.752.6505.
Professional staff at Crossroads Centers are available to
provide education about alcohol and drugs, family issues in
addiction, supervisor training, and any number of topics in
the field for schools, organizations, churches, companies,
and other community groups. For additional
information, call 410.752.6505.
Crossroads Centers staff provide individual counseling
for all clients involved in its treatment programs on a
scheduled basis and as requested by clients.
Counseling is also available for family members on a limited
basis. Ongoing need for family therapy requires
referral to community professionals. Since individual
counseling in addiction treatment is most effective in
conjunction with a group-based treatment program, it is only
provided on a limited basis to those not enrolled in a
program.
Crossroads Centers has several staff who are trained and
certified as Employee Assistance Professionals (EAPs) and
Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs). They are
available to area businesses for training of supervisory
personnel in how to identify employees who may have a
problem with alcohol and/or drugs on the basis of workplace
performance issues and how to make certain that those
employees are assessed appropriately. For more
information about worksite training, call 410.752.6505.
Because Crossroads Centers has a specialty in providing
treatment for licensed professionals (nurses, physicians,
dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists, attorneys),
staff can also work with professional boards and work sites
to assist them in how to identify and refer their
professionals into treatment. Our staff have made
presentations to hospitals, the Maryland Board of Nursing,
the Maryland Bar Association, and nursing homes in the area.
For more information about training for professionals,
call 410.752.6505.
The requirements for Department of Transportation
(DOT) substance abuse cases are detailed and stringent and
require the services of a certified SAP. We provide
evaluations, referrals and follow up work for all DOT cases
including specialized urinalyses required by the DOT.
We accept referrals from SAP evaluators who have determined
the treatment needs required by their clients and provide
careful and detailed reports as required.

There are times when clients require the expert testimony
of a certified or licensed addictions professional for their
legal situations. Crossroads Centers provides those
services. The fee is $200.00 per hour plus the cost of
chart copies when required.
Several times each year Crossroads Centers holds
professional training sessions at one of its locations.
Topics are relevant to addictions professionals and those in
related fields. CEUs are available for addictions,
social work, and nursing professionals. Check our
Events section for up to date information or call one of our
centers for information.
Every year Crossroads Centers is a sponsor of the Tuerk
Conference on Addictions held at the Baltimore Convention
Center. The event is open to professionals in all
fields and is sponsored by the Maryland Chapter of the
National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence.
Crossroads Centers also sponsors an annual spirituality
conference in the Frederick area, generally in concert with
one or two addiction centers in Western Maryland. This
year's conference will be held in May in Frederick.
See our events calendar for additional information or call
one of our centers for more information.
In 2005 Crossroads Centers in Baltimore experimented with
incorporating the practice of yoga into its treatment
program. Currently all clients in the Intensive
Outpatient Program in Baltimore attend a weekly yoga group
led by Laura Hardesty, a yoga instructor as well as a
CSC-AD. Laura uses yoga to teach relaxation techniques
and as another approach to helping clients integrate the
twelve-step recovery program into their daily lives.
Laura is starting a new yoga class at the Baltimore
center for those in recovery. Participants do not have
to be in any Crossroads Centers program nor do they have to
be graduates of Crossroads Centers. For more
information, call 410.752.6505 and leave a
message for her.
All three centers are in the early stages of introducing
outpatient groups for women in early recovery. Through
the group process women will begin to address issues of self
esteem, abuse, empowerment that will help them maintain and
strengthen their recovery. Groups will be led by
certified and/or licensed addictions professionals.
